# Reclaim 5 Hours: Auto Tracking | Times Tables Software

5 August 2026

If you are a primary school teacher or a curriculum lead at a Multi-Academy Trust, here is the short answer up front: the single biggest thing EdTech can do for you right now is not dazzle your pupils with animations. It is to mark the work, store the data, and report the progress without you lifting a finger. That is the bar schools are setting in 2025, and it is a completely reasonable one.

## Why This Conversation Is Happening Now

When I looked into the current state of EdTech spending in UK schools, one pattern stood out immediately. Schools are still investing meaningfully in digital tools, but the decision-making criteria have shifted sharply. Budget pressures are real, and so is the teacher retention crisis. The conversations happening in school leadership teams right now are not "will this engage the children?" They are "will this save my staff time, and can I prove it?"

That shift matters for how any EdTech platform, including XTables Champions, should be talking to schools. A product that is wonderful for pupils but creates extra admin for teachers is not a product schools can justify right now. Schools need both: genuine pupil benefit and genuine teacher relief. Neither on its own is enough.

## The Hidden Workload Inside Times Tables Practice

Times tables practice sounds simple. Children practise, teachers check, everyone moves on. In reality, the workload attached to it is quietly significant.

Think about what manual tracking actually involves. A teacher sets a worksheet or an online activity. She collects results, either on paper or by navigating a dashboard that was not built with her workflow in mind. She records who has mastered which tables, who is stuck on 7s, who has regressed since last week. She prepares a note for the parent, flags a concern for the SENCO, and adjusts next week's groupings accordingly. Then the Multiplication Tables Check comes around and she realises she does not have a clean, exportable record of progress across her whole class.

None of those individual tasks is enormous. Together, across a full class, across a term, they add up. **In the schools we speak to, maths coordinators tell us that times tables admin alone can quietly eat into planning time in ways that are hard to justify when every other subject is also competing for attention.**

## What "Zero Prep" Actually Means in Practice

I want to be honest about what we mean when we say zero-prep software. It does not just mean the children log in and play. It means the teacher does not have to build anything, configure anything, or interpret raw data before she can act on it.

With XTables Champions, a teacher does not set up question banks or calibrate difficulty levels. The curriculum-aligned content is already there, mapped to the Year 4 MTC standard, and the platform adjusts to each pupil automatically. When a child finishes a session, the marking is done. The progress is recorded. The teacher's dashboard shows her, at a glance, which children are on track and which need a nudge, without her having to cross-reference three spreadsheets.

For MAT curriculum leads in particular, that consistency matters. If you are overseeing maths across eight or twelve primary schools, you cannot rely on every class teacher interpreting data in the same way. Automated tracking means the data is comparable across your whole trust, not just within one classroom.

## Preparing for the MTC Without Creating Extra Work

The Multiplication Tables Check is a real source of low-level anxiety for Year 4 teachers, and I do not mean just for the children. Teachers feel the pressure of it too. When I read what maths leads are saying in teacher forums and school networks, the consistent worry is not that children cannot learn their tables. It is that there is not enough time to track individual readiness properly, identify gaps early, and intervene before the check date.

XTables Champions was built with that specific pressure in mind. The platform mirrors the format and timing of the actual MTC, so pupils are practising in conditions that match the real thing. But more than that, it gives teachers continuous, automatic data on each child's readiness, not just a snapshot the week before the check. That means earlier interventions, less last-minute scrambling, and a much calmer run-up for everyone.

As our founder Gal Darrash puts it, "We built XTables Champions because we kept hearing the same thing from teachers: the pressure is real, the time isn't there, and the children feel the stress of both. We wanted to change that, for the teacher and the child at the same time."

## What Schools and MATs Should Actually Be Asking EdTech Providers

If you are evaluating any maths platform right now, I think these are the questions that cut through the noise most quickly.

1. Does the marking happen automatically, or does someone still need to review and record it?
2. Can I see progress data across my whole class, or year group, or trust, without building my own reports?
3. Is the content already aligned to the national curriculum and the MTC format, or will I need to adapt it?
4. Does it reduce the number of tools my staff are logging into, or add to that list?

Those four questions will tell you more about whether a platform will actually save time than any demo will. Any platform worth its place on a MAT's shortlist should be able to answer all four clearly.

## What We Are Seeing in Our Early Work

XTables Champions is a young company, and I want to be straight about that. We are not claiming to have transformed hundreds of thousands of classrooms. What I can tell you is what we keep hearing in our early conversations with teachers and school leaders: the appetite for something that simply works in the background, without creating new tasks, is enormous right now. Teachers are not looking for more technology to manage. They are looking for technology that manages itself.

That is exactly what we are building towards, and the feedback we are getting is that automatic marking and instant class-wide progress tracking are the features that matter most to the adults in the room.

## Ready to See How It Works for Your School?

If you are a primary school teacher, maths lead, or curriculum director at a Multi-Academy Trust, particularly one that is consolidating its EdTech tools across multiple schools, I would love to show you what XTables Champions looks like in practice.

Head to [xtableschampions.com](https://xtableschampions.com) and get in touch with us directly. Tell us a little about your school or trust, and we will walk you through exactly how the automated tracking and MTC preparation tools work, with no pressure and no jargon. The goal is simple: your teachers should leave that conversation with a clear picture of whether this genuinely saves them time. We think it will.
