# Texas Math Academies 2026 for K-3 | Times Tables Software

1 August 2026

Texas is about to raise the bar on early maths education, and if you are a curriculum coordinator, instructional coach, or district leader in a major ISD, you need to be across what is coming. The short version: from the 2026-27 school year, Texas is piloting new Mathematics Academies that mandate professional development for K-3 teachers, with explicit instruction in maths fluency at the centre. This is not a gentle nudge. It is a structural shift in how the state expects foundational numeracy to be taught, and it creates a real, near-term challenge for schools that have not yet assembled the right tools and resources to meet it.

I want to be honest about my perspective here. I work with XTables Champions, a young, founder-led EdTech company. We are not a huge organisation with decades of Texas district data behind us. What we do have is a product built specifically around the two things the new framework keeps returning to: fluency-first instruction and anxiety reduction. So when I read through the Texas Education Agency updates on the Mathematics Academies rollout, I felt the alignment was worth writing about plainly and directly.

## What the Texas Mathematics Academies Framework Actually Requires

The Mathematics Academies are being designed to equip K-3 teachers with the knowledge and instructional strategies they need to teach foundational numeracy effectively. When I looked into this, two themes came up consistently in the TEA documentation. The first is **explicit, structured instruction in maths fluency**, particularly around number facts and automaticity in early grade bands. The second is what the framework calls "behavioural learning" strategies, which in practice means addressing the motivational and emotional dimensions of maths learning, including maths anxiety and avoidance behaviours.

Those two things are not separate concerns. They are deeply connected. A child who has not achieved fluency with number facts will often develop avoidance patterns, because effortful, slow recall makes maths feel threatening. The TEA framework appears to recognise this, and it is one of the more encouraging aspects of the policy direction.

For curriculum coordinators in districts like Houston ISD, Dallas ISD, and Austin ISD, the practical question is not whether the mandate matters. It is what to put in front of teachers and pupils to actually deliver it.

## The HQIM Question: Selecting the Right Instructional Materials for Fall 2026

Texas schools are already familiar with the concept of High-Quality Instructional Materials. The state has a review and approval process, and TEKS alignment is a baseline expectation. But fluency-specific tools sit in a slightly different space. Many general maths curricula cover fluency in theory, but do not give it the daily, structured practice time that research on automaticity consistently points to as necessary.

What I keep seeing, both in reading about the Texas rollout and in the early conversations we are having with educators, is that schools are looking for something that sits alongside their core curriculum without replacing it. Something that delivers consistent, low-stakes fluency practice at the right level of challenge for each child, and that does not turn every session into an anxiety event.

This is where the behavioural dimension becomes practical rather than theoretical. A tool that drills children with a stopwatch and public leaderboards might technically deliver fluency practice, but it can entrench the very avoidance behaviours the framework wants to reduce. The approach matters as much as the content.

## Fluency Without the Fear: Why Methodology Is the Differentiator

When I look at how XTables Champions is built, the thing that feels most relevant to this moment is the deliberate attention to the emotional experience of practice. The platform is designed so that children build fluency through repetition and progression, but within a structure that keeps challenge positive rather than threatening. Progress is visible and motivating. The pace adjusts. Children are not pitted against each other in ways that highlight who is struggling.

As our founder Gal Darrash puts it, "We built this because we kept hearing from teachers that their children were scared of times tables. The goal was never just speed. It was confidence first, then speed."

That philosophy maps quite naturally onto what Texas is now asking districts to do at scale. Explicit fluency instruction does not have to mean drill-and-pressure. Done well, it means structured, frequent, confidence-building practice that moves children from effortful counting to automatic recall, which then frees up working memory for higher-order problem-solving.

## What This Means for Districts Preparing for the 2026-27 Rollout

If you are sourcing tools ahead of the Fall 2026 rollout, here are the three questions I would focus on.

1. Does the tool deliver genuinely explicit, structured fluency practice aligned to TEKS expectations for each grade band, rather than just gamified maths in general?

1. Does it give teachers meaningful data, so they can see which children have achieved automaticity and which still need targeted intervention, without having to run separate assessments?

1. Does the experience itself reduce anxiety rather than amplify it? Look at how progress is framed, how errors are handled, and whether the environment feels competitive in unhelpful ways.

These are not trick questions. They are the criteria the Texas Mathematics Academies framework is essentially asking schools to apply, even if it does not spell them out in exactly those terms.

I will also say this plainly: XTables Champions is a newer entrant in the US market, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can offer Texas districts right now is a direct conversation about how the platform works, what the experience looks like for pupils and teachers, and whether it makes sense alongside the materials your schools are already using.

## Talk to Us Before the Rollout Begins

If you are a curriculum coordinator, assistant superintendent, or instructional leader in a Texas district preparing for the 2026-27 Mathematics Academies implementation, I would genuinely encourage you to get in touch with us at XTables Champions. We are actively speaking with schools and districts about K-3 fluency, the anxiety piece, and what effective practice looks like in real classrooms.

We are not here to sell you a solution before you have had a chance to understand what it does. We are here to have an honest conversation about whether what we have built fits what you need. Reach out through xtableschampions.com, and let's talk through it properly before the rollout pressure ramps up.
