Here is the short answer: no, it is not a confidence problem in the way most people mean it. What you are describing is performance anxiety, and it is completely different from not knowing the material. Your child almost certainly does know their times tables. The issue is that being watched, called on, or timed activates a stress response that temporarily overwhelms the part of the brain doing the recall. This is not a character flaw, a lack of effort, or a sign that the learning hasn't stuck. It is a very real neurological reaction, and once you understand that, the way you help them changes completely.

What I Am Actually Seeing in the Research Right Now

When I looked at what parents are searching for this week, one pattern kept coming up alongside the usual maths anxiety searches. It is slightly different from the general "maths anxiety" conversation. Parents are specifically describing a child who is completely fine at home, one-to-one, no pressure, who then goes blank the moment a teacher calls on them, a grandparent asks them to show off, or they sit down in front of a class test. That is a very specific flavour of the problem, and it deserves its own answer.

What I keep seeing come up in the parent conversations I follow is the deep frustration of watching this happen in real time. One parent described it perfectly: her daughter could rattle off the six times table over breakfast, cheerfully and without hesitation, but the moment the teacher asked the class a question and eyes turned toward her, she went completely blank. The parent knew the knowledge was there. The child knew it too. And yet.

Once that expectation is lodged, even a relaxed audience can trigger it.

I understand that instinct completely. But for many children, especially those who are already anxious, more performance pressure rehearses the anxiety rather than reducing it. Each failed public retrieval moment adds to the internal evidence they are collecting that they cannot do it when it counts.

Flashcards and rapid-fire quizzing at home can recreate the same cortisol spike as a classroom test, which means you are not building confidence, you are practising freezing.

What Actually Helps

The goal is not to train your child to perform under pressure. The goal is to reduce the pressure sufficiently that the knowledge they genuinely have can come out naturally, and to build enough positive retrieval experiences that the brain stops treating the situation as a threat.

A few things that genuinely make a difference:

  1. Remove the audience entirely for a while. Not forever, but deliberately. Let them practice in a way that feels private and low-stakes. No checking over their shoulder, no asking them to demonstrate to relatives. Give the retrieval pathway room to strengthen without the stress response getting in the way.
  1. Replace performance with play. When the practice context feels like a game rather than a test, the threat signal does not fire in the same way. Multiplayer games, where the focus is on the shared experience rather than on being evaluated, are genuinely useful here. Your child is busy competing or collaborating with someone else, not being watched by an authority figure waiting to see if they get it right.
  1. Celebrate process, not performance. When they get an answer right quietly, at home, without an audience, say something about the effort rather than making a fuss about the correct answer. Over-praising a correct answer in front of others can actually reinforce the idea that maths answers are high-stakes social currency.
  1. Talk about the freezing openly and without drama. Naming it helps. "That happens to lots of people. Your brain knows the answer. Sometimes it just needs a quieter moment to find it." Short, matter-of-fact, and then move on. Do not dwell.

How the Practice Environment Changes Everything

One of the things I find most interesting about what parents tell us is how much the setting shapes the experience. A child who freezes during a teacher's whole-class question might be absolutely fearless in a multiplayer game against classmates, because the social dynamic is different. In a game, everyone is playing. No one is specifically watching them. The stakes feel shared rather than personal.
