If your child can rattle off seven eights under their breath on the sofa but stares at a blank page the moment you hand them a worksheet, the problem almost certainly is not their maths. What you are watching is a processing and anxiety response, not a knowledge gap, and it is far more common than most parents realise.
I want to lead with that, because when I looked at what parents are searching for this week on Pinterest, there is a cluster of rising searches around exactly this scenario: children who can do the mental work but cannot seem to get it onto paper. Combine that with what I keep seeing in parent threads on Reddit, and the picture becomes really clear. Parents are sitting there watching their child answer questions correctly out loud, then hand them a worksheet and see them freeze, shut down, or start guessing wildly. It is genuinely distressing to witness, and the instinct to push harder almost always makes it worse.
The Two Things Happening at Once
There are usually two things colliding in that moment when a child freezes over paper.
The first is what some people call the performance switch. When maths moves from a relaxed spoken exchange to something written and permanent, many children feel it shift into test territory. The pencil makes it real. It can be marked. It can be wrong. For a child who already carries any level of maths anxiety, that shift from conversation to record-keeping triggers exactly the same stress response as a formal test, even at the kitchen table.
The second is a genuine difference in how some children process information. A number of neurodivergent children, and those with working memory differences in particular, find that the act of forming letters and numbers by hand uses up enough cognitive bandwidth that the maths itself suffers. They are not being lazy. They are genuinely running two demanding processes at the same time, and one of them gives way.
The maths knowledge is often completely intact. The writing environment is what disrupts it.

First, separate the practice from the performance. If your child can answer out loud, let that be the practice. Call out a question, they answer. Keep it conversational. Keep it moving. That is real retrieval practice and it builds the memory trace just as effectively as writing it down. You do not need the pen.
Second, reduce the environmental cues that say "this is a test". The kitchen table is fine. But if the child associates worksheets with school stress, swap the format entirely. Digital games, spoken questions, even just working it out on a whiteboard and wiping it away immediately removes the permanence that triggers the freeze.
Third, if writing is part of the goal, separate the writing from the maths. Let them say the answer first, then write it at their own pace, without any sense of time pressure. You are scaffolding two skills, not testing one. That distinction matters enormously.
Fourth, watch what happens to their body when the worksheet appears. A child who goes quiet, whose shoulders drop, whose eyes go to the ceiling, is already in a mild stress response. That cortisol spike is not a moral failing. It is a physiological reaction. The gentler and more low-stakes you can make the environment, the more of their working memory stays available for actual maths.
Why Games Change This Equation Completely
This is exactly why game-based maths practice lands differently for so many children in this situation. In a well-designed game, the stakes feel low even when the child is working hard. They are focused on the game, not on whether their answer is being judged. The pressure is redistributed by the game mechanic rather than sitting squarely on the child.
What I keep seeing come up in parent conversations, and in the wider research being shared by educators right now, is that the children who are most locked out by worksheets are often the ones who engage most deeply with genuinely fun, multiplayer maths games. The social element of playing alongside or against other children adds motivation without adding the kind of evaluative pressure that freezes them. There is a meaningful difference between wanting to get it right for your team and dreading getting it wrong in front of an adult.
