If your child can explain that three groups of five makes fifteen but still cannot recall 3×5 instantly when asked, they are not behind and they are not struggling with maths. They have hit a very specific gap between understanding and fluency, and the two are not the same thing at all. The good news is that this gap is fixable, and it does not require drilling flash cards every evening until everybody is miserable.

This is one of the most common worries I have seen come up in the signals I follow as I research parent concerns week by week. When I looked at what parents are searching for right now on Pinterest, the phrase "fun ways to teach multiplication" sits alongside "maths anxiety symptoms" and "how to help child with maths anxiety" in a way that tells a clear story. Parents are not confused about what multiplication is. They know their child gets it. What they cannot figure out is why the facts refuse to lodge themselves in their child's memory in a way that can be retrieved quickly and reliably.

On Reddit, the parent voices saying the same thing are almost word for word: "She knows 3×5 but if you ask what 5×3 is, she's lost. And division is a disaster." That is not a maths problem. That is a memory retrieval problem, which is a completely different thing.

Understanding the Gap (And Why It Matters)

Conceptual understanding means your child knows what multiplication represents. Fluency means they can retrieve a specific fact without having to rebuild the answer from scratch every time. Both matter, but they live in different parts of how the brain learns.

When a child understands that multiplication is repeated addition, that is a brilliant foundation. But the moment they hit a classroom test, a timed check, or even just a teacher asking quickly around the room, they need rapid retrieval, not reconstruction. If they have to count up in threes to reach fifteen every single time, they will always be slower than the question demands. And over time, that slowness becomes a source of anxiety all by itself.

The real problem is not that the facts are missing. It is that they have not yet been stored in a way that allows quick access.

This is where repetition matters, but not all repetition is equal. Rote drill and flash cards work by sheer force. They hammer facts in through pressure and volume. For some children, that works fine. For many others, especially children who are neurodivergent, anxious, or whose working memory is different, the pressure of timed or high-stakes repetition actually blocks the transfer of facts into long-term memory. Cortisol floods the system, the working memory shuts down, and nothing gets stored.

What Genuinely Helps Facts to Stick

From the parents and educators we speak to at XTables Champions, the things that genuinely move the needle are not more repetition for its own sake. They are repetition that feels safe, spaced, and engaging enough that the child stays curious rather than defensive.

A few things worth trying at home:

  1. Separate the concept from the retrieval practice. Make sure your child fully understands what multiplication means before you ever ask them to recall a fact under any kind of time pressure. Story-based approaches work well here. Some parents describe giving numbers characters and environments, building narratives around why six groups of seven makes forty-two. Silly, specific and memorable beats abstract and pressured every time.
  1. Use spaced practice, not massed practice. Five short sessions across a week will almost always beat one long session on a Sunday afternoon. The brain needs sleep and rest to consolidate what it has taken in. A few minutes each morning, or just after school while the child has a snack and is relaxed, tends to stick better than a formal sit-down practice session.
  1. Introduce inverse facts deliberately and gently. If your child knows 3×5=15, explicitly show them that 5×3=15 is the same family. Do not assume they will make that connection automatically. Many children, particularly those with dyscalculia or working memory differences, genuinely do not see the commutative property as obvious. Show it, name it, celebrate it.
  1. Let the emotional register change. If practice sessions at home are tense, nothing will stick well. Even ten minutes of a maths game that feels like a game, not a test, will produce more storage than thirty minutes of anxious drilling.

Why Games Work Better Than Most Parents Expect

I know it can feel counterintuitive. Letting your child play a maths game instead of sitting down with a worksheet seems like you are letting them off the hook. But the research backs up what parents keep telling us from their own experience: children who are engaged and low-anxiety during practice retain far more than children who are stressed and compliant.

Do not wait and hope it resolves itself.

Most of the time though, what I hear from parents in this situation is that things genuinely do shift once the pressure comes down and the practice becomes more playful and consistent. It takes longer than the flash-card route promises, but it tends to last.
