When the Facts Just Won't Stick | Times Tables Games

This week I have been doing a lot of listening. My colleagues Riley and Owen have been gathering voices from Reddit threads and X, and what keeps rising to the surface is a theme that cuts across every age group and every classroom setting. It is not about timers or tests this week. It is something quieter and, honestly, more unsettling: the feeling of being left behind by a fact that simply will not stay put.

The student who knew it last week and has no idea today

A teacher came to Reddit this week visibly shaken. They described teaching a student multiplication two weeks ago, watching her breeze through worksheets with almost no support. Then: "Yesterday we revisited it and she had no clue what it was or how to do it." They wrote that this was genuinely the first time they had experienced something like this and did not know what to do next.

This one landed with a lot of people in the thread because so many parents know exactly that experience from the other side. You sit with your child on a Sunday, they have it, you feel relieved, and then the teacher sends home a note on Wednesday. What happened? The honest answer is that a single successful session is not the same as a fact that has truly settled into long-term memory. It needs revisiting in varied ways, spread over time. That is not a failure of the child and it is not a failure of the teacher. It is just how memory works, and it is worth saying plainly so nobody feels like they are doing it wrong.

The children who are still building foundations in secondary school

Two voices stayed with me this week that I do not think get heard enough. The first is from an 11th grader who wrote: "I always struggled at math and I want to take my time to learn and remember my multiplication facts from 1 to 12. I've always been ashamed of this since 3rd grade." They were not asking for sympathy. They were quietly, determinedly trying to fix something they had been carrying for years.

The second came from a 16-year-old who wrote that she had not realised how badly the gap would catch up with her until she hit radicals and trigonometry: "I was actually crying five minutes in." She had asked her boyfriend for help and found herself in tears before the session had barely started.

What strikes me about both of these is the sheer length of time the shame has been sitting there. Years. And the thing neither of them was told early enough is that the gap is fixable. It is not a character flaw and it does not mean the higher-level maths is out of reach. It just means somebody needs to help them build the foundation properly, without the baggage of humiliation attached to it.

The tutors and teachers who are not quite sure what they are dealing with

Something Riley spotted this week that I thought was really honest: a tutor writing about a 12 or 13-year-old they see once a week. They said: "I'm not entirely sure if he doesn't know how to do multiplication, or if he just lacks the confidence. If he doesn't know, how can I teach him, and if he lacks confidence is there anything I can do to help considering I only see him, at most, once a week?"

That question deserves a lot more recognition than it usually gets. Tutors are often working in short, infrequent windows, with almost no diagnostic data, trying to work out whether what they are looking at is a knowledge gap or an anxiety response. The two look almost identical from the outside. A child who freezes and says "I don't know" might genuinely not know, or they might know perfectly well and have completely lost faith in their ability to access that knowledge under any kind of scrutiny. Telling the difference matters, because the response is different. One needs more input. The other needs the pressure removing before any input can land at all.

A mum and maths educator also shared something this week that has been sitting with me since I read it. She described building stories around numbers, giving them characters and environments, because her own child could not hold onto facts through worksheets and flashcards. She called the character Sixby the Deer, who gets tangled in 42 vines. It sounds eccentric, but she was onto something real: meaning and narrative help the brain file things in a way that a naked number fact simply does not.

The adults who are still working it out

I want to spend a moment on this one because the voices here were surprisingly raw. One thread this week was started by someone training as a primary school teacher. They wrote that despite having the relevant maths qualifications, they had realised they genuinely could not remember a lot of foundation-level content, including times tables, because they had not used it in years. They were worried about standing up in a classroom and not knowing what the children were about to ask them.

Another post, separate from this, came from someone who asked plainly: "Is it normal to be an adult and not know your multiplication table?" They wrote that big multiplication was still rough for them and that they sometimes still needed their fingers, and said they felt like a second grader.

These voices matter because they remind us that the current generation of parents sitting at the kitchen table trying to help their children is often doing so with their own unresolved gaps and anxieties. They are not lazy or indifferent. They are trying, and many of them are doing so quietly, without telling anyone, because the shame attached to this particular gap is enormous and almost universally unspoken.
