Every week I listen to what parents and teachers are actually saying online and at the school gates, and every week something catches me off guard. This week it was not one single dramatic moment but a cluster of quieter, stranger ones. Forgetting that seemed total. A question asked in a different order that broke everything. And a teacher genuinely baffled by a student who, two weeks earlier, had been flying.
The student who simply forgot, and the teacher who could not explain it
One of the most striking things shared this week came from a teacher rather than a parent. She described teaching a multiplication lesson that, by every measure, had gone brilliantly. Her student worked through her worksheets almost independently, answered correctly, seemed genuinely confident. Two weeks later, the same student had no memory of any of it. As the teacher put it, "Two weeks ago we did a multiplication lesson for the day and this student was crushing it. Whole day went smooth after the initial explanation and she breezed through her worksheets with almost zero help from me. I genuinely thought she had it down." Then: nothing. She described herself as genuinely not knowing what had happened, and asking for advice because it was a first for her.
I found this one really moving, honestly. Because it is the kind of thing that makes a teacher question their own methods, their own memory of events. But the truth is that a single successful session rarely equals durable learning. Maths facts need revisiting in different contexts, on different days, in low-pressure moments. The forgetting is not a failure of the child or the teacher. It is just how memory works, and it is a reminder that one good lesson, however good, is rarely enough on its own.
The question asked backwards, and the child who could not cross that bridge
A mum shared something this week that I suspect resonated with a lot of people. Her daughter knows that 3 times 5 is 15. She has that one. But ask her "3 times what equals 15?" and the connection simply does not form. As the mum described it, "When she is asked '3 times what equals 15' she doesn't get how to answer it, even though she knows 3x5. The different order is just too confusing for her. And then division is so rough."
This is not a learning failure. It is actually a very specific and understandable gap. Knowing a fact in one direction does not automatically mean a child can run it in reverse. Division and missing-number questions require a different kind of understanding, one built on seeing multiplication as a relationship rather than a string of memorised answers. The good news is that this gap is entirely bridgeable once you know it is there. Helping children connect the fact family (3, 5, 15 belong together in both directions) is a gentler step than it might seem right now.
The adults who are still carrying it
Something that keeps coming up in the signals Riley and Owen are gathering is the number of adults who reach out not on behalf of a child but on behalf of themselves. This week it included a 42-year-old man with multiple qualifications who described his inability to recall his times tables as a source of deep shame and anxiety. It included an 11th grader quietly working back through the curriculum from third grade because nobody had ever noticed the gap. And it included a 16-year-old who ended up in tears trying to get help from her boyfriend because her struggles with multiplication were now blocking her in trigonometry and radicals.
What strikes me every time I read these is how long people carry this. The 42-year-old is not unusual. Maths gaps have a way of sitting quietly in a person for decades, surfacing only when they become visible to others, and carrying a weight of embarrassment that feels entirely disproportionate to the gap itself. None of these people are unintelligent. They just did not find the right way in at the right time, and then felt too ashamed to ask.

Schools stepping back from fact fluency, and the knock-on effects
A few parents and teachers flagged something slightly different this week, less about a single child and more about a systemic pattern. One parent noted that at her children's school there had been very little dedicated work on times table memorisation, and that it was, as she put it, "really hurting kids' ability to move up to middle school algebra later." A teacher mentioned that her students used to use a mental maths platform through school but that the funding had gone, and she was left looking for alternatives. Another parent, describing her daughter as someone who completely shuts down with repetitive practice, was clear that rote drilling was not the answer, but also clear that her daughter needed something.
There is a tension here that I do not think anyone has fully resolved yet. Rote memorisation alone is not enough, especially for children who need more than repetition to engage. But fluency still matters. A child who reaches secondary school without confident times table recall faces a genuine uphill struggle in algebra, fractions, and beyond. The question is not whether to build fluency but how to do it in a way that actually reaches each child.
