It is properly July now, and the school gates are technically closed. But the conversations have not stopped. Riley has been watching Reddit threads light up with worried parents and exhausted tutors, and the Twitter/X signals Owen brought back this week have a distinct summer flavour: anxiety about lost ground, desperation to make learning feel like anything but learning, and a quiet, rarely-admitted worry from some teachers themselves. Here is what I heard.
"She needs more than just sitting and repeating them over and over"
The most urgent voice this week came from a parent of a neurodivergent child who put it plainly: "She is totally shutting down with math. She needs more than just sitting and repeating them over and over because that doesn't get her attention." And from another parent, dealing with what sounds like dyscalculia: "When quizzing her earlier today, she was unable to multiply 3 by 5, even when using fingers to count."
These are not parents looking for a magic trick. They are parents who have already tried the obvious things and watched them fail. What keeps coming back across these threads is the recognition that rote repetition, the kind that works fine for some children, can actively make things worse for others. One mum summed it up without any drama: "Her visual memory is a huge struggle for her, and flash cards ain't going to cut it."
I hear this every week and it still lands hard. If the method itself is causing the shutdown, trying more of the same method is not persistence. It is just more pain. The real question these families are asking is: what else is there?
The summer slide is real and parents are quietly panicking
With the holidays underway, a distinct second wave of worry is building. Parents are searching, in their own words, for ways to stop the maths slide without triggering the meltdowns that come with worksheets on the kitchen table. One parent described the household standoff perfectly: "her arithmetic is terrible, eg she'd take ages to work out 38+16 or 9+7... sorry I sound really unloving and harsh." That little apology at the end of the sentence tells you everything. They are not harsh. They are frightened, and they know that summer is exactly when the gaps widen.
A homeschooling parent raised something worth sitting with: "I think it is not so great in terms of repetition. You can't rely on it for good enough repetition." This was about a popular games-based platform, and the criticism is fair. Engagement and actual mastery are not the same thing. A child can enjoy an app for forty minutes and still not recall a single new fact reliably the next morning.
The phrase that kept appearing in Owen's signals this week was "stealth learning", which is parents trying to find something that builds fluency without the child noticing it is schoolwork. That is not laziness or avoidance. That is an intelligent, caring response to a child who has already learned to associate maths with dread.
A mum educator who builds stories around numbers
This thread stopped me properly. A mum who is also a maths educator wrote: "My own child struggled with worksheets and flashcards. So I started building stories around each number, giving them characters and environments. For example, Sixby the Deer (for 6) gets tangled in 42 vines."
She was asking if anyone else had explored story-based strategies for times tables. What I found moving about it was that she had not posted it as a triumph. She posted it as a question, a little uncertainly, wondering if others had found the same thing. The replies showed she was far from alone.
This matters because it points to something the signals confirm again and again: when the emotional temperature around a fact is warm rather than threatening, children retain it. One teacher described watching a pupil who had been "crushing" multiplication two weeks earlier come back to the lesson apparently remembering nothing. "Genuinely don't know what happened here," the teacher wrote. The most likely answer is anxiety and working memory collapse, not forgetting. The knowledge was there. The conditions to retrieve it were not.

The teacher in the room who is also quietly anxious
This is the voice I want to end on because I think it is underacknowledged. A student teacher posted this week that they had started primary training and realised, with some alarm, that they had forgotten much of the foundation maths they were going to be teaching, times tables included. "I am particularly worried about times tables," they wrote. And separate signals from Owen flagged recent research suggesting that nearly one in five primary teachers experiences high maths anxiety, which in turn shapes how they teach the subject, often towards drill-heavy approaches that feel controllable, even when those approaches are not working for the children in front of them.
There was also a teacher who posted: "My students used to play the mental maths challenge on Mathletics but we don't have funding anymore." Budget cuts are closing the door on tools that actually worked, and teachers are scrambling to replace them with something that will not simply bore children into indifference. "Previously the likes of MyMaths was very much just fine," one school leader said, with a weary honesty I respect.
None of this is the teacher's fault. But it does mean that when we talk about maths anxiety, we cannot only mean the children. The adults in the room carry it too, and that matters.
