Maths Anxiety Hijacks Working Memory | Times Tables Games

Maths anxiety is not a confidence issue children grow out of. It is a cognitive one, and new research published in 2026 confirms it directly impairs the working memory children need to do maths in the first place. If you are a teacher or parent watching a capable child freeze at a times table test, this is exactly what is happening inside their head — and there are practical ways to interrupt it.

What the 2026 Research Actually Says

When I looked into the most recent findings coming out of Rutgers Graduate School of Education and published via Frontiers, the mechanism was clearer than I expected. Maths anxiety triggers a threat response. That threat response consumes working memory resources, the very short-term cognitive space children need to hold numbers, apply a method, and produce an answer. The anxiety does not just make maths feel hard. It literally makes maths harder by occupying the mental bandwidth required to do it.

This is why a child can know their times tables at home and go completely blank on a test. The knowledge is there. The working memory capacity to retrieve it under pressure has been eaten up by anxiety.

The NAEP data running alongside this research is sobering. Fourth-grade maths proficiency in the US has been stagnant at around 39%, and researchers are drawing a direct line from pandemic-era disruption to this plateau. Children who missed foundational maths instruction during key development windows, particularly in Key Stage 1 and early Key Stage 2 equivalent years, are now in upper primary carrying anxiety that is solidifying, not fading. What stood out to me reading through this is that the researchers are emphatic: anxiety formed in the K-5 years tends to persist. It does not self-correct.

The children most affected are disproportionately from disadvantaged backgrounds, where access to targeted support has been thinner. That detail matters enormously.

Why Year 4 Is the Pivotal Year

Year 4 (Grade 4 in the US) sits at an uncomfortable intersection. Children are old enough for anxiety to have already embedded itself through repeated negative experiences with maths. They are young enough that the right intervention can still genuinely rewire their relationship with numbers. Miss this window and the research suggests the pattern becomes much harder to shift.

Here's what I'm seeing from the conversations we're having with schools: the children who struggle most are not the ones who cannot do maths. They are the ones who have learned to believe they cannot do maths. Often after a handful of timed tests or being asked to recall a fact in front of the class before they were ready. The anxiety came first. The avoidance followed.

Three Ways to Stop Maths Anxiety Taking Hold

1. Remove time pressure from initial learning, then reintroduce it gradually. Timed drills given to an anxious child before they have achieved fluency create exactly the conditions that trigger the working memory block. The sequence matters enormously. Build the knowledge in a low-stakes, pressure-free environment first. Only once a child can recall a fact reliably without anxiety should you introduce any kind of timed or performance element, and even then, introduce it slowly, in private rather than publicly.

2. Use repetition that feels like play, not like testing. The brain consolidates procedural knowledge through retrieval practice, but the retrieval needs to happen in a state that does not activate the threat response. This sounds more abstract than it is. If a child is laughing or engaged in something that feels like a game, their cortisol is not spiking. Their working memory stays available. They are retrieving and embedding at the same time. The format of practice genuinely changes what the brain does with the information.

3. Make progress visible and child-owned, not teacher-reported. One of the most consistent things I have noticed in early conversations with schools is how much it matters to the child that they see their own progress. Extrinsic praise from a teacher fades quickly for an anxious child who has learned not to trust their own maths ability. When the child can see the arc of their own improvement, the narrative shifts. They are no longer "bad at maths". They are someone who is getting better at maths. That is a meaningful distinction, and the research backs it up as a key factor in reducing maths anxiety over time.

What This Means for Schools Right Now

The 2026 research is not telling us anything that good primary teachers did not already sense. But it does give us the cognitive science to explain what is happening and, more usefully, why certain approaches work and others backfire. Timed recall tests given too early do not just fail anxious children. They actively reinforce the anxiety. Structured, game-based retrieval practice in a genuinely low-pressure environment does the opposite.
