The short answer is this: timed flashcard drills and repetitive worksheet loops are on their way out, and for good reason. Educational leaders across the UK and the US are actively rethinking how primary students learn multiplication and number facts, and the direction of travel is unmistakable. Gamified, low-stress, conceptual practice is replacing what teachers have long called "drill and kill," and the evidence for why that matters is building fast.

For many children, the pressure of "you have two minutes to answer sixty questions" is the moment maths stops being interesting and starts being frightening.

This is what the "drill and kill" critique is really about. It is not anti-practice. Daily practice is still essential. It is anti-meaningless, high-stakes repetition that strips away curiosity and replaces it with fear.

What Maths Fluency Actually Looks Like in 2025

Fluency is not the same as memorisation. That distinction matters enormously.

A child who has memorised 7 x 8 = 56 under pressure might freeze if the question is phrased differently, or placed in a word problem, or if they haven't seen it in a few weeks. A child who is genuinely fluent understands the relationship between numbers well enough to reconstruct the answer, check it, and apply it flexibly. Fluency is about building mental models, not storing isolated facts.

What I am seeing in the current pedagogy conversation is a strong move toward what some educators are calling "conceptual fluency," where the goal is not just speed but understanding. Metacognition plays a role here too: children who can reflect on their own thinking, who know when they are confident and when they are guessing, are far better placed to grow.

The other shift worth noting is timing. Short, structured daily practice of under ten minutes is consistently showing more promise than occasional long sessions. That is partly about how memory consolidation works, and partly about keeping emotional stakes low. A ten-minute session that feels like a game carries none of the psychological weight of a forty-five minute worksheet block.

Why Gamification Is Not Just a Gimmick

I understand the scepticism. "Gamified learning" can sound like a way of dressing up the same old content in a shinier wrapper. But the genuine version of it is different in structure, not just in aesthetics.

When practice is embedded in a game mechanic, several things change. The child is motivated by progress within the game rather than by fear of a wrong answer. Mistakes become part of the loop rather than a moment of public failure. The feedback is immediate and non-judgemental. And crucially, the child is often choosing to keep going, rather than enduring a set task.

That shift in emotional experience is not cosmetic. When children feel safe, curious, and in control, their working memory is freed up to do actual learning rather than managing anxiety. That is a real cognitive difference.

In our early conversations with schools, the thing teachers mention most is not features or content coverage. It is engagement. The question they are really asking is: will my students actually want to do this? Because a tool that children avoid is not helping anyone.

The New York and Northeast US Context

What makes this moment particularly interesting is the geographic dimension. Progressive urban school districts in New York and across the Northeast US have been at the forefront of moving away from high-stakes standardised test prep as a daily classroom mode. There is genuine appetite among teachers and curriculum leads in these districts for structured, evidence-informed alternatives to flashcard drilling, and they are actively searching for tools that can help.

But "short" only works if the ten minutes are genuinely well-structured, genuinely engaging, and genuinely low-stakes.

A ten-minute worksheet that a child dreads is not the same as a ten-minute gamified session that a child looks forward to. The duration is identical. The learning outcomes, and the emotional outcome, are not.
