Integrating Game-Based Fluency into Your MTSS Tier 2 Math Strategy

If you're a SPED director, interventionist, or elementary math lead currently planning your Fall MTSS tiers, here's my honest take: game-based fluency practice is one of the most underused tools available at Tier 2, especially for students with math anxiety, dyscalculia, or processing differences. And right now, as summer district planning ramps up across California, Texas, New York, and beyond, is exactly the right moment to think carefully about what actually works for those students before the semester begins.

But what I'm going to share draws on what we know about MTSS frameworks, what the research says about fluency and anxiety, and what we keep hearing from the educators we speak to directly.

What MTSS Tier 2 Actually Demands from a Math Intervention

MTSS, the Multi-Tiered System of Supports, asks a specific question at Tier 2: what structured, targeted intervention can we offer to the 15 to 20 percent of students who aren't responding to core instruction alone? For math fluency in grades 3 to 5, that's almost always about automaticity. Students who can't recall multiplication facts quickly enough are spending so much working memory on computation that word problems, fractions, and multi-step reasoning become nearly impossible.

But here's the piece that gets skipped in a lot of Tier 2 planning: for students with math anxiety, the intervention itself can become a source of stress if it's not designed carefully. Timed worksheets, public recall exercises, and drill-and-kill software can actually deepen avoidance rather than build fluency. The anxiety becomes the barrier, not the knowledge gap.

When I looked into the research on this, what stood out consistently is that low-stakes, engaging repetition, where students are focused on a game rather than on being evaluated, tends to produce better fluency gains for anxious learners. The cognitive load of embarrassment is removed. The practice still happens. The repetition is still there.

Why Game-Based Practice Fits the Tier 2 Model

A well-designed game-based fluency tool fits Tier 2 in a few concrete ways that are worth spelling out.

First, it allows for differentiated entry points without singling students out. In a small Tier 2 group, students can all be playing within the same environment but working at different levels. There's no visible hierarchy of who's on which worksheet.

Second, multiplayer formats are genuinely motivating in a way that individual drill isn't. What we keep hearing from teachers is that students who flatly refuse to engage with a maths worksheet will sit and practise for twenty minutes without complaint if they're in a game with a classmate. The competitive or collaborative element shifts the emotional context entirely.

Third, for students with dyscalculia or other processing differences, the visual and interactive design of the learning environment matters enormously. A SEND-friendly interface isn't just a nice extra; it's what makes the tool accessible in the first place.

How This Maps to Title I and SPED Intervention Budgets

I'm not going to pretend I know every district's budget process in detail, but what I do understand is that Title I funds and SPED intervention allocations are typically earmarked for programmes that can demonstrate a clear link to identified student needs. That means your selection rationale matters as much as the tool itself.

If you're writing a justification for a fluency programme at Tier 2, the clearest argument is this: the students in question have an identified gap in foundational math fluency, standard core instruction hasn't closed it, and the intervention you're selecting addresses both the skill deficit and the affective barriers (anxiety, avoidance, low confidence) that are maintaining it.

Game-based fluency practice, when it's purpose-built for neurodivergent and anxious learners rather than just gamified for marketing purposes, can sit squarely inside that rationale. It's not supplemental entertainment. It's structured, repeated, targeted practice in a format that removes the emotional barriers that make traditional practice ineffective for this population.

Practical Steps for Fall Semester Planning

From the conversations we're having with schools and the early work we're doing with educators, here's what tends to make Tier 2 fluency implementation actually land:

  1. Identify your Tier 2 cohort early, before the semester starts, so you're not scrambling in September. Use your spring screening data to flag students in grades 3 to 5 who are below benchmark on multiplication fluency.
  1. Decide on your session structure. Tier 2 typically means three to five sessions per week of targeted practice. A twenty-minute game-based fluency session fits inside that window cleanly and doesn't require a specialist to run it, which matters for staffing.
  1. Check your tool's accessibility features before you commit. For students with dyscalculia, dyslexia, or attention differences, things like font choice, contrast, lack of timed pressure in early stages, and clear visual feedback all affect whether the tool is genuinely usable or just theoretically inclusive.
  1. Plan your progress monitoring touchpoints. Tier 2 only works if you're checking whether students are responding. Most good fluency platforms will give you usage and performance data. Know in advance what a positive response looks like and when you'd move a student to Tier 3.

None of this is complicated in principle. The difficulty is always in the planning window, which is right now, over summer, before the semester hits and everyone is overwhelmed.

Dyscalculia and Math Anxiety: The Students Who Need This Most

I want to say something plainly here, because it gets glossed over in a lot of intervention planning conversations. Students with dyscalculia are not students who just need more practice of the same thing. They need the practice, yes, but they also need it delivered in a way that accounts for how their brains process numerical information differently.

Game-based fluency, done well, doesn't just repeat facts at them. It creates multiple exposures through different game mechanics, different visual representations, and different interaction types. For a student whose brain doesn't naturally anchor numerical symbols to quantities, that variety of exposure is more useful than drilling the same format repeatedly.

This is why SPED coordinators specifically should be in the room when fluency tools are being selected for Tier 2. It's not enough for a tool to be engaging for neurotypical anxious learners. It needs to have been designed with neurodivergent learners in mind from the start.
