Short answer: it depends on the age, but if your child is in Year 4, 5 or 6 and still counting on fingers for every multiplication, it is worth paying attention to. Not in a panic-stations way. In a calm, let's-understand-what's-actually-happening way. Because finger-counting is usually a signal, not a failure.

When I looked at what parents are searching for this week, one pattern kept catching my eye. Alongside the bigger, louder searches around maths anxiety and the MTC fallout, there is a quieter, very specific worry running underneath: parents who can see that their child understands multiplication, who know the logic is there, but who watch their child tap out 7, 14, 21 on their fingers every single time, even for facts they've "done" dozens of times. It doesn't look like panic. It looks like habit. And parents aren't sure whether to push, ignore it, or quietly worry about it.

I want to talk about that, because it matters more than it might seem.

What Finger-Counting Actually Tells You

Finger-counting isn't evidence that your child doesn't understand multiplication. Often it's the opposite. They understand it perfectly well. What they haven't yet built is what educators call automatic recall, which is the ability to retrieve a fact instantly from memory rather than computing it fresh each time.

Think of it like reading. A young reader sounds out every letter. An experienced reader sees the whole word in one glance. The meaning is the same. The processing load is completely different. A child who has to reconstruct 8 x 7 from scratch every time is burning a lot of mental energy on something that could, with the right practice, become instant. And when mental energy goes on the calculation, there's less left for the actual problem they're trying to solve.

This is the gap that matters most heading into upper KS2: not whether a child understands times tables, but whether they've built fluency.

That gap tends to hit hardest in Year 5 and 6, when the maths suddenly assumes children can multiply without thinking about it, because now they're being asked to do fractions, long division, area, ratio. If a child is still counting every multiplication, those topics become genuinely overwhelming very quickly.

Why Some Children Stay Stuck at the Finger Stage

From the parents we speak to, and from what I keep seeing come up in the threads and searches I track, there are a few reasons children don't make the jump from understanding to fluency.

The most common one is that practice has always felt high-stakes. If every time a child has tried to recall a times table, someone has been watching, timing them, or asking them to perform in front of others, they've learned that maths retrieval is a pressured event. Finger-counting feels safer because it gives them a way to check their own answer before it leaves their mouth. It's actually a very sensible coping strategy. For a child with anxiety, or for a neurodivergent child whose working memory is already under strain, that protective habit can become very deeply embedded.

Another reason is that a lot of times-tables practice at home involves one or two sessions of repetition followed by a gap, followed by the child appearing to have forgotten everything. This isn't laziness and it isn't a memory problem. It's simply how memory works. Facts need to be retrieved repeatedly across time, in slightly different contexts, for them to stick without effort. A single worksheet or one good run-through on an app doesn't do that.

And for some children, particularly those with dyslexia, ADHD or dyscalculia, the path from understanding to fluency genuinely is longer. That isn't a deficit. It means they need more varied, lower-pressure repetitions, not faster or harder ones.

What You Can Do Differently at Home

The most important thing is to separate performance from practice. If your child feels that every times-tables moment is a test, they will keep protecting themselves with finger-counting. So reduce the performance element as much as you can.

Instead of asking "quick, what's 6 times 8?", try doing it alongside them. Say the answer together. Make it conversational rather than interrogative. This sounds almost too small to matter, but in the conversations we've had with parents, this shift alone has changed the feeling in the room.

Repetition needs to be spaced rather than crammed. Short sessions spread across the week will always beat one long session. Ten minutes three times a week beats thirty minutes on a Sunday night. The brain consolidates memories during rest, not during the session itself.

Game-based practice helps enormously here, and not just because games are more fun. A well-designed game creates the repetition without the child feeling like they're repeating. They're making decisions, reacting, competing, winning. The times table answer is incidental to the experience. That's the psychological trick that makes it land differently.

A Note on What "Fixed" Actually Looks Like

Fluency builds gradually. You won't see one day where the finger-counting stops. What you'll see, over weeks, is that certain facts stop needing fingers. Usually the 2s, 5s and 10s go first. Then the 3s and 4s. The 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s are always the last to stick, and that's normal. Celebrate the ones that land without fingers. Don't draw attention to the ones that still need them.

The goal is to make practice feel safe enough, and interesting enough, that your child keeps doing it. Volume of retrieval over time is what builds automatic recall. Your job isn't to drill it into them. Your job is to find a way to make them want to keep going.
