The Multiplication Tables Check window is running right now, 1–12 June 2026, and if you work with SEND or neurodivergent pupils in Year 4, the 6-second per-question limit is almost certainly the thing keeping you up at night. My honest take: the timer is not a neutral feature. For many children, it is the single biggest barrier between them and demonstrating what they actually know.
What the current data is telling us
When I looked into the latest reporting from Tes this month, one number jumped out immediately. The 9x6 and 6x9 tables carry the highest national error rates of any question on the check, with some data pointing to up to 27% of pupils getting these wrong. That is not a small figure. It suggests that even neurotypical children are being caught out, so for pupils who already experience maths anxiety or who process information differently, the combination of a hard fact and a ticking clock is genuinely brutal.
What the MTC format demands is instant recall. Not understanding. Not reasoning. Not even a quick mental calculation. The 6-second window is shorter than the time most adults need to consciously work through an unfamiliar multiplication. For a child with dyscalculia, ADHD, or generalised maths anxiety, that countdown does not just measure fluency. It measures how quickly the brain can suppress its own stress response, which is not a maths skill at all.
Why the timer specifically triggers anxiety in SEND pupils
Here is what I keep coming back to when I read the research on maths anxiety in children. The problem is not usually that a child cannot learn multiplication facts. The problem is that they have learned to associate the act of being tested on them with a spike of fear, and fear physically blocks recall. It is a well-documented stress response: cortisol rises, working memory narrows, and the fact that was sitting right there a moment ago vanishes.
The 6-second MTC timer compresses that process into a loop that repeats 25 times. For a pupil with sensory processing differences, or for someone who already has a fragile relationship with maths, each question can feel like a small failure before they have even had a chance to begin. Teachers and SENCOs I speak to describe children who know their tables at home, in conversation, in low-stakes games, and who then freeze completely under check conditions. That gap between what a child knows and what they can demonstrate under timed pressure is the real problem here.
The 9x6 problem deserves its own moment
I want to stay with 9x6 specifically, because I think it illustrates something important. This is a fact that most children encounter relatively late in their fluency-building, and it sits in a part of the times-tables grid that gets less repetition than the earlier, more familiar multiplications. It is also one where a child's instinct to calculate ("9 times 5 is 45, plus 9 more is 54") is entirely reasonable and mathematically sound, but that mental step takes more than 6 seconds for most learners.
The check does not reward a child for knowing how to get to 54. It only rewards arriving there in time. That distinction matters enormously when you are thinking about what you actually want children to learn about mathematics.
What timer-free practice actually looks like
When I look at what genuinely works for building fluency without triggering the anxiety spiral, a few things stand out. Low-stakes repetition over time builds far stronger long-term recall than high-pressure drilling. Multiplayer formats, where a child is focused on the game rather than on being judged, lower the emotional stakes while keeping engagement high. And removing the countdown entirely changes the physiological experience of the practice itself.

And looking ahead to next year: the most effective thing you can do is build fluency over time, in formats that do not teach children to fear the process.
