My Child Knows Their Times Tables at Home but Goes Blank at School. What Is Actually Going On?

If your child can fire off 7x8 at the dinner table without blinking, but comes home from school saying they couldn't remember a single one in front of the class, you are not imagining things. This is a real, very specific problem, and it has nothing to do with how clever your child is. The knowledge is genuinely there, but the environment is switching it off. Once you understand why that happens, you can actually do something about it.

It Is Not a Memory Problem. It Is a Safety Problem.

When I looked at what parents are searching for this week, one thing kept surfacing alongside the usual times-tables anxiety searches: the specific frustration of a child who clearly knows something at home but can't retrieve it under pressure. Parents are baffled by it. Some worry their child is being lazy. A lot of them feel like they've somehow failed at the home-practice side of things.

They haven't. And neither has their child.

What's happening sits in the gap between learning a fact and being able to recall that fact under stress. At home, your child is calm. Their brain is in a state where it can access what it has stored. In a classroom, especially during something like a test or when a teacher calls on them in front of peers, the brain reads that as a threat. Cortisol floods in. Working memory, which is the mental workspace your child needs to pull up a fact and use it, gets hijacked. The answer that was completely available ten minutes ago at your kitchen table is suddenly nowhere to be found.

This isn't a metaphor. It's a genuine cognitive response, and it's more pronounced in some children than others, particularly those with ADHD, anxiety, or any kind of processing difference.

The Conditions Where Learning Happens Are Not Always the Conditions Where Testing Happens

Here's the part that doesn't get talked about enough. When your child practises at home in a relaxed way, their brain is encoding the information under calm conditions. But recall is context-dependent. That means memory is easier to access in conditions that resemble where it was laid down.

A classroom during a timed exercise, or the Multiplication Tables Check with its six-second-per-question window, is about as different from a calm home environment as you can get. The lighting, the noise, the social stakes, the time pressure. All of it shifts the retrieval context entirely.

What I keep seeing come up in the conversations parents are having online is the sheer confusion and guilt around this. One parent described their daughter as "brilliant at bedtime but useless at school", which broke my heart a bit because that framing misses the point completely. Her daughter is not useless. Her daughter has learnt something in one emotional climate and is being asked to retrieve it in a completely different one.

What You Can Practically Do at Home

The goal is to gradually practise in conditions that are a little more varied, without ever tipping into pressure. You are not trying to simulate a stressful classroom. You are trying to make the knowledge more portable, less attached to a single calm setting.

Start by introducing tiny, low-key variations into home practice. Ask a times-tables question while your child is doing something else, like helping you put the shopping away or walking to the car. Not as a test. Just conversationally, almost throwaway. "Hey, what's 9x6?" and then move on. No lingering, no performance. This gently teaches the brain that recall can happen in different contexts without it being a big deal.

If your child plays games, particularly games with other people, this is where things get interesting. From the parents we've spoken to, children who regularly retrieve facts inside games, even low-stakes multiplayer ones, start to show more flexible recall over time. The game context is emotionally different from a kitchen table drill but it still isn't a school test, so it builds a bridge. The child is pulling up knowledge while slightly distracted, slightly socially engaged, slightly uncertain of what's coming next. That is much closer to the conditions of a real classroom than any quiet home session.

That's the real target. Not perfect recall at the kitchen table. Portable, confident recall everywhere.

What to Say to Your Child

This bit matters as much as the practical strategies. If your child is already aware that they go blank at school, they may have started building a story about themselves. "I'm bad at maths." "My brain doesn't work in class." "I'm stupid."

None of that is true, and they need to hear that clearly and specifically, not just generally reassured. Try something like: "Your brain knows this. You've shown me that. What happens at school is that your brain gets a bit nervous, the same way anyone's stomach flips before something important. That's not a memory problem, it's a nerves problem, and nerves can be worked on."

That distinction, between not knowing and being temporarily blocked, is genuinely helpful for children to hear. It changes the internal story from "I'm broken" to "I'm a normal person whose brain does a normal thing under pressure."

A Note on Tools That Help
