If your Year 4 child just sat the Multiplication Tables Check and the score wasn't what you hoped for, here is the honest truth: a low score almost certainly does not mean your child is bad at maths. It means they haven't yet built the kind of automatic, instant recall that the test specifically demands, and that is a very fixable thing.

The June 2026 Multiplication Tables Check has just wrapped up across England, and schools are now sitting with their data, working out what it tells them. I've been reading through the DfE guidance and the conversations happening in parent and teacher communities, and what strikes me most is how many children were undone not by not knowing their tables, but by the strict 6-second response window that the test enforces for every single question.

That detail matters enormously, and I want to break it down for you.

What the 6-Second Limit Actually Reveals

The MTC is an adaptive, computer-based test. Children get 6 seconds per question, with a 3-second pause between questions. That sounds reasonable on paper, but in practice, 6 seconds is only enough time if a child retrieves the answer automatically, the way they retrieve their own name. If a child is counting on fingers, skip-counting up through a sequence ("7, 14, 21, 28..."), or reconstructing the answer from a related fact, they will run out of time even if they eventually get to the right number.

When I looked into this closely, what stood out was how many children have been taught strategies for working out times tables rather than being trained to recall them. Strategies are genuinely useful when you're first learning. But the MTC does not test strategy. It tests automaticity. Those are two different skills, and conflating them is where a lot of preparation goes wrong.

The children who struggled most with the 6-second rule tend to fall into a few groups: those who rely on skip-counting, those experiencing maths anxiety (where even a known fact temporarily vanishes under pressure), and neurodivergent children for whom timed testing introduces a layer of cognitive load that has nothing to do with whether they actually know their tables.

What a Low Score Does and Doesn't Tell You

The MTC is scored out of 25. There is no official pass mark, which surprises a lot of parents. The DfE uses the data at a school level to identify where support is needed. At an individual level, the score is a snapshot, not a verdict.

What a lower score does tell you is that your child needs more reps at speed, ideally in conditions that feel low-stakes enough that panic doesn't override memory. What it does not tell you is that your child is behind, struggling, or unlikely to get there. The gap between "knows the tables" and "recalls them in 6 seconds without anxiety" is real, but it is also bridgeable with the right kind of practice.

Here's what I keep hearing from the schools and families we speak to: the children who found the MTC hardest are often the ones who practised the most, but practised in the wrong register. Lots of written worksheets, lots of chanting, but not much timed retrieval practice that mirrors the actual test experience.

That distinction is everything.

The Summer Window: How to Actually Help

The summer break is genuinely the best time to close this gap, and not because you should be drilling your child at the kitchen table every morning. Heavy, anxious drilling is precisely what tends to make things worse for children who already found the test stressful.

What works is short, regular, retrieval-based practice that feels more like a game than a test. The research base on this is consistent: spaced repetition (coming back to facts across multiple sessions rather than hammering them in one go) and low-pressure retrieval practice build automaticity far more effectively than rote drilling.

Practically, this means:

  1. Keep sessions short. Five to ten minutes daily beats forty minutes once a week, every time.
  2. Focus on the facts your child actually doesn't know yet, not the whole table set. The MTC emphasises 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables because these are statistically the sticking points.
  3. Introduce a little time pressure gradually, starting with no timer at all, then a relaxed timer, then building toward the 6-second window over weeks rather than days.
  4. Celebrate the process, not just the score. A child who tries a hard fact and gets it wrong has still done something useful. Normalise the attempt.

For children who showed signs of anxiety during the check, the approach needs to be even gentler. The timer itself can be a trigger. Starting with untimed retrieval and only introducing speed gradually, once the fact is genuinely known, tends to produce much better outcomes than throwing a stopwatch at a child who is already nervous.

Planning Ahead for 2027

If your child is currently in Year 3 and will sit the MTC in June 2027, you actually have an ideal amount of time to build genuine automaticity without pressure. The schools we're in early conversations with are already thinking about how to structure that practice across the year rather than cramming it into the final half-term.

The key shift I'd encourage is moving from a focus on teaching tables to a focus on training recall. Those are different activities. Teaching is about understanding. Training recall is about repetition, retrieval, and speed building over time. Both matter, but the MTC only tests the second.

Starting that retrieval practice early in Year 3, little and often, building gradually toward timed conditions in the spring of Year 4, is the approach most likely to produce confident, calm performance on the day.
