From the Playground: Sensory Overload, Homework Battles and the Quiet Shift Away from Drill-and-Kill

This week I've been doing a lot of listening. My colleagues Riley and Owen have been trawling Reddit threads and Twitter conversations so I can bring the real voices back here, because honestly, the things parents and teachers are saying right now deserve to be heard properly. There are some themes that kept coming up again and again, and they tell a story that feels important.

"Too much going on before the maths even starts"

One of the loudest complaints this week, across both Reddit and Twitter, came from parents and teachers of neurodivergent children who are exhausted by the sheer visual noise of most maths apps. One mum put it plainly: "Why do all these maths games have to have flashing neon lights and chaotic sound effects? It's too much for my son." A special education teacher said almost exactly the same thing from the classroom end: "Too many flashing animations, loud sound effects, and cluttered screens distract my students from the actual maths." And a SENCO summed it up in a way that stuck with me: "There is too much visual clutter on these maths websites. My neurodivergent kids get completely overwhelmed before they even start the maths."

What strikes me here is how consistent this is. These aren't isolated complaints from one fringe corner of the internet. This is a chorus. And the frustration isn't really about the maths at all. It's about children being asked to perform in an environment that is actively hostile to how their brains work. A child who is already bracing themselves for a difficult task should not have to wade through a sensory assault just to reach question one. The design of these tools is doing real harm, and the teachers and parents living with that every day are rightly angry about it.

The homework hour that breaks the whole evening

Several parents shared something this week that felt very honest and a little raw. It wasn't just about the child struggling. It was about the whole family struggling. One parent wrote, "He just doesn't want to do rote memorisation on a digital keypad. It feels like a chore and ends in an argument every night." Another described it slightly differently: "We have tried flashcards and chanting, but he just zones out. He only wants to play multiplayer games on his tablet."

There was also a thread on Twitter where a parent was candid about the fact that their own fear of maths is making everything worse. Their worry about getting it wrong in front of their child is being picked up and amplified by the child. There is real emerging research in 2026 pointing to this intergenerational dimension of maths anxiety, and it is starting to get traction in teacher conversations too. What these families need is not more drilling. They need a way in that feels genuinely different from the thing that already isn't working.

The question one teacher asked in a Reddit thread captures it well: "How are you making multiplication fluency genuinely fun?" She wasn't looking for a magic trick. She was asking because she's tried everything she can think of and she's still watching children disengage. That question deserves a better answer than the EdTech market is currently giving her.

"They play Fortnite at home. A 2012 maths game fools nobody."

This one made me laugh, but it also made me think. A teacher put it bluntly: "They play Fortnite and Roblox at home. When I put on a 'fun maths game' from 2012, they see right through it and get bored in five minutes." She's right, and it's uncomfortable, because a lot of what gets sold to schools as engaging EdTech really is a thinly veiled worksheet with a cartoon mascot on it.

On Twitter, there's a growing conversation among educators about moving towards what some are calling academic e-sports: genuinely multiplayer, genuinely social environments where children are competing and collaborating with each other, not sitting alone answering questions while a cheerful jingle plays. One Reddit thread specifically asked for multiplayer maths games that didn't overstimulate neurodivergent students, because the gap in the market is obvious to anyone working in a classroom. The tools that exist are either too stimulating or not stimulating enough. Finding the middle ground where a child is engaged because the experience is genuinely enjoyable, not because they fear getting it wrong, is harder than it sounds.

What SENCOs are quietly asking their networks

The conversations among SENCOs this week were particularly telling. One wrote: "Our school uses standard apps that just don't accommodate our kids with dyscalculia. The number pads are tiny and the fonts are unreadable." Another, on Twitter, asked her network for maths fluency software that "isn't overwhelmingly gamified with flashing lights" and is actually suitable for autistic students. There were several variations of the same question: not just what tool works, but what tool was actually designed with their children in mind rather than retrofitted with an accessibility checkbox.

With UK local authorities restructuring SEND funding and Element 2 budgets getting tighter, SENCOs are also asking whether there are scalable digital alternatives to one-to-one TA support. That's a real, pressured, practical question and it reflects how much weight is being placed on class teachers and SENCOs right now to do more with less.
