If your child has maths anxiety, dyslexia, ADHD or any other neurodivergent profile, the summer holidays are not a neutral break. For many of these children, six weeks away from structured learning means real regression in maths fluency, and come September, the gap between them and their peers widens again. But here is the thing: the answer is absolutely not a workbook on the kitchen table.
I have been looking closely at what parents are searching for as the UK summer break approaches, and the pattern is clear. Searches for things like "summer maths practice for dyslexic kids", "fun times tables games at home" and "maths anxiety summer holiday" are peaking right now, in July. What parents are not looking for is another photocopy pack. They want something their child will actually do, without it turning into a battle.
That tension, between knowing their child needs the practice and dreading the fallout from forcing it, is exactly what I want to address here.
Why Standard Workbooks Make Things Worse
I want to be honest about something that does not get said enough in the EdTech space. For a child without significant maths anxiety, a summer workbook is probably fine. A bit dull, maybe, but fine. For a child with a neurodivergent profile, it can be actively damaging.
When I looked into the research on maths anxiety, one thing that stood out to me immediately is how fast the anxiety loop kicks in. A child who has struggled with times tables during the school year has already built up a set of associations: maths equals failure, equals embarrassment, equals a bad feeling in the chest. Presenting that child with a worksheet on a hot July afternoon does not reset those associations. It reinforces them. The holiday meltdown parents describe on forums is not defiance. It is a stress response.
The most important thing you can do this summer is separate maths practice from anything that looks or feels like school.
That is not about lowering standards. It is about working with how your child's brain actually responds to challenge, rather than against it.
Screen Time That Actually Counts
Here is something I keep hearing from parents in our conversations: the guilt around screen time. Parents of neurodivergent children often feel they are already giving their child "too much" screen time because gaming is one of the few activities that genuinely engages their child for sustained periods. So the idea of using a screen for maths practice feels like adding to a problem.
I would gently push back on that framing. Not all screen time is equivalent. A child who spends forty minutes in a multiplayer times-tables game is practising number recall, pattern recognition and mental arithmetic in real time, under mild, manageable pressure, in a context they actually want to be in. That is qualitatively different from passive video consumption.

Five Practical Approaches That Actually Work
So what does low-friction summer maths practice look like? Here is what I would suggest, based on what we are hearing from parents and the schools we speak to.
- Let your child lead the session. Rather than scheduling "maths time", keep a game-based tool accessible and let your child open it when they feel like it. Children with ADHD and autism in particular respond much better to self-initiated activity than imposed schedules during holidays. Even two or three short sessions a week will maintain fluency.
- Make it social where possible. Multiplayer formats change the dynamic entirely. When a child is playing against a friend or sibling, the competitive element overrides the anxiety response. They are focused on winning, not on whether they know their six times table. That incidental focus is where the learning happens.
- Drop the tracking conversation. For the summer, stop asking "how many did you get right?" Progress chat, even well-meaning progress chat, can reactivate the performance anxiety you are trying to sidestep. Let the app track it quietly. You do not need to discuss it.
- Pair it with something they love. If your child is a Minecraft obsessive, let them play that first, then transition to a maths game as a natural next activity rather than an interruption. Timing matters hugely for neurodivergent children, and transitions are easier when the sequence feels logical and low-stakes.
- Keep sessions short and never extend them against resistance. Ten genuinely willing minutes beats forty minutes of tears every single time. The goal is to keep the association between maths and "okay, I can do this" alive across the summer. You are maintaining a spark, not igniting a new one.
A Note for Parents in Birmingham, Manchester and Other Big Cities
If you are based in a larger UK city, you may already be part of parent groups or school communities where this conversation is happening. What I am seeing is that awareness of the summer maths slide is much higher than it was even a few years ago, but the practical options that work for neurodivergent children are still not well known. Sharing what actually works, particularly game-based, multiplayer tools, with other parents in your network is genuinely useful. These conversations spread quickly in parent WhatsApp groups, and they help other families who are quietly struggling with the same problem.
The September Gap Is Real, But Preventable
Come September, the children who return having done nothing maths-related for six weeks will typically take several weeks to rebuild fluency. For a child already behind, that delay compounds. For a child with maths anxiety, the return to formal maths lessons after a long break is one of the most stressful moments of the school year.
Keeping that fluency alive across the summer does not require drama or a strict regime. It requires something your child will actually engage with, on their own terms, without it feeling like homework.
