Summer Math Slide Hits Grade 4 Hardest | Times Tables Games

Here is the honest takeaway: if a child with ADHD, dyslexia or math anxiety finishes third grade without solid multiplication fluency, a long summer break can make that gap significantly harder to close come September. I have been reading a lot of the conversation coming out of NCTM publications and EdSurge this season, and the concern around what researchers call the "summer slide" is louder than usual, especially for students entering Grade 4.

What the Summer Slide Actually Means for Grade 4 Multiplication

The summer slide is the measurable dip in academic skills that happens over the school break. For reading, there are decades of awareness and a shelf full of strategies. For math, and specifically multiplication fluency, the conversation is still catching up.

Grade 4 is a pivotal year. Students are expected to move from building conceptual understanding of multiplication to applying it fluently across problem-solving and fractions. When I looked into the progression expectations across US curricula, what stood out to me is how much Grade 4 content assumes automatic recall of times tables. If a child enters the year shaky on their 6s, 7s and 8s, every lesson that builds on those facts becomes a compounding struggle.

For neurodivergent students, that compounding effect is sharper and faster than it is for their peers. A child with ADHD may have spent third grade relying on working memory tricks and teacher scaffolding that simply disappear over summer. A student with dyscalculia may have made real progress in a structured classroom environment, only to have that progress erode without consistent, low-stakes practice.

Why Flashcards and Worksheets Make Math Anxiety Worse

Here is what I keep seeing talked about in SEND-focused EdTech circles, and it matches what we are hearing in our own early conversations with teachers: the tools families reach for over summer, flashcards, timed worksheets, drill apps with red X marks and countdown timers, are often the exact tools most likely to reinforce math anxiety in children who already have it.

For a child with ADHD or high anxiety, the experience of a timed drill feels like a test, every single time. The stress response kicks in, working memory drops, and the child performs worse than they actually know. Then they associate that failure feeling with multiplication, and you have made the problem bigger, not smaller.

As our founder Gal Darrash puts it, *"The kids who most need to practise are the ones most likely to shut down the moment it feels like a test. The practice has to feel like something else entirely."*

That is not a niche observation. It is the central design challenge for anyone building tools aimed at neurodivergent learners.

Multiplayer Games Change the Emotional Experience of Practice

What we have built at XTables Champions is deliberately different from a drill. The times-tables and maths fluency practice happens inside popular game formats that children already want to play, and a lot of it is multiplayer. That matters for a specific reason.

When a child is playing against a friend or classmate, the emotional frame shifts. They are not performing for a teacher or being assessed. They are competing, collaborating, having fun. The math is still happening, the recall is still being practised, but the anxiety trigger is much lower. For children with ADHD in particular, the social and competitive element of a multiplayer game provides the dopamine-linked engagement that a lone worksheet simply cannot.

I want to be clear: we are a young company and I am not going to overstate what we know. But the schools we have spoken to have been consistent in telling us that engagement is the first hurdle, and that getting a child with math anxiety to sit down and practise voluntarily is most of the battle. What Teachers and SENCOs Can Do Right Now

If you are a teacher, SENCO or parent thinking about September, here are the things I would focus on for neurodivergent children transitioning into Grade 4.

First, prioritise engagement over accuracy in the summer period. The goal is not perfect recall before school starts. The goal is keeping the child's relationship with math positive, so the first weeks of September do not feel like a wall.

Second, look at the emotional design of whatever tool you use. Does it punish wrong answers visibly and loudly? Does it have a countdown timer that creates urgency? Does it make the child feel watched and assessed? If the answer is yes to any of those, it is worth reconsidering for a child with anxiety or ADHD.

Third, build in social practice wherever possible. Two children playing a multiplayer math game together, even informally over summer, is more valuable than the same child drilling alone on a worksheet for twice as long. The recall is happening, but so is something else: the child is learning that math can be fun, shared, and low-stakes.

For schools thinking about RTI (Response to Intervention) frameworks ahead of the new year, the first thirty days of Grade 4 are a critical window for identifying which students need Tier 2 support in multiplication fluency. Having a tool ready that does not immediately trigger anxiety responses is a practical head start.
