Short answer: yes, it genuinely matters, but not in the rigid, flashcard-drilling way most of us picture. When a child reaches Year 5, the maths curriculum assumes they can recall multiplication and division facts quickly enough that those facts stop being the puzzle and start being the tool. If retrieval is still slow and effortful at that stage, it gets in the way of everything that comes next, from fractions and long multiplication to ratio and algebra further down the line.
But here is what I want you to hold on to: 'by heart' does not have to mean weeks of miserable drilling. And if your child is not there yet, you are not behind and neither are they.
Why Year 5 Is the Real Tipping Point
I have been looking at what parents search for this week, and one pattern that keeps jumping out is the anxiety around the Year 4 to Year 5 transition. Parents describe a child who muddled through Year 4 with some creative skip-counting strategies, and then suddenly arrived in Year 5 to find the whole maths landscape had shifted. The teacher uses a shorthand that assumes fluency. The pace of lessons assumes fluency. And suddenly the child who was coping feels exposed.
This is not a failure on anyone's part. It is a structural thing. The National Curriculum puts the formal expectation for times-tables fluency squarely at the end of Year 4, which is why the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) happens in Year 4. But the real-world consequence of not quite getting there shows up in Year 5, when teachers start teaching with the tables rather than teaching the tables themselves.
From the parents we speak to at XTables Champions, what I hear again and again is that the Year 5 crunch arrives without much warning. One mum told me her daughter had been described as a 'solid mathematician' all through lower KS2, and then by October of Year 5 was coming home saying she felt stupid. Nothing about her daughter had changed. What had changed was the assumed baseline.
What 'By Heart' Actually Needs to Look Like
The goal is automatic retrieval: the fact pops up before the working memory has to stop and calculate. That is different from vague familiarity. Your child might 'know' that 7 x 8 = 56 in the sense that they can work it out reliably. But if that working-out takes three or four seconds of mental effort every single time, their brain is spending cognitive resources on the calculation rather than on the maths problem those numbers are sitting inside.
So what does solid fluency look like in practice? It looks like a child who answers a random times-tables question in about one to two seconds without visible effort. It does not look like a child who recites the whole 7-times table in sequence before finding the answer. And it does not need to look like a child performing under a stopwatch with red screens flashing when they get one wrong.
That distinction matters enormously for children who have anxiety around maths. Speed under pressure and genuine automatic recall are not the same thing, and confusing the two is part of what causes children to freeze.
How to Build That Recall at Home Without the Nightly Battle
The good news is that this kind of fluency is built through spaced, low-stakes repetition rather than intense cramming. Here is what I would suggest trying:
- Short and frequent beats long and occasional. Five minutes every day is far more effective than forty-five minutes on a Sunday. The brain builds retrieval pathways through repeated light exposure, not through one long exhausting session.
- Work from what they already know outward. Most children heading into Year 5 have decent fluency on their 2s, 5s and 10s. Use that as a launchpad. The 4s follow naturally from doubling the 2s. The 8s follow from doubling the 4s. Progress feels real when you build it as a connected web rather than as fourteen separate lists to memorise.
- Separate the learning from the pressure. The retrieval itself needs to feel low-stakes. If every practice moment also feels like a test, the anxiety response kicks in and recall actually gets worse, not better. Let them get it wrong without consequence. Let them look back at a prompt if they need to. The fluency comes through the repeated attempt, not through punishing errors.
- Let them choose the format where possible. A child who has some agency over how they practise is far more likely to stick with it. Some children respond to physical card games. Others need a digital format with a story or a character. The actual mechanism matters less than the consistency.

That is the whole puzzle in one sentence. The best times-tables practice is the one that does not need to be fought over.
The Tables That Catch Most Children Out in Year 5
From what I keep seeing in parent conversations and in the questions that come through to us, the tables that most often create friction in Year 5 are the 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s. Not coincidentally, these are the ones that have the fewest patterns to lean on and the most cross-fact confusion (7 x 6, 6 x 7, 8 x 7, 7 x 8 all blur together for children who learned each table in isolation).
If your child is solid on most tables but wobbles on those four, that is a very specific and very solvable problem. It is not a maths problem. It is a retrieval problem, and targeted daily practice on those specific facts makes a measurable difference within a few weeks.
The division side of those facts is also worth building at the same time. Children who know 6 x 7 = 42 but have never been asked 42 divided by 6 or 42 divided by 7 are only halfway there. Year 5 maths leans hard on inverse operations.
What to Do If Your Child Is Already Anxious About This
If the conversation with your child's teacher has already triggered worry at home, the most important thing is to separate urgency from pressure. Yes, there is a real benefit to getting there. No, panic at home will not speed the process up and will almost certainly slow it down.
Start with what your child can already do and make that visible to them. Let them feel like someone who knows some times tables rather than someone who has failed to know all of them. That identity shift, from 'bad at maths' to 'getting there', is often what makes the actual practice feel possible.
