If your child has started saying "I'm just bad at maths" or "my brain doesn't do numbers", the most important thing I can tell you right now is this: that's not a fact about your child. It's a story they've started telling themselves, usually after one too many moments of feeling stuck, exposed, or embarrassed. And stories, unlike fixed abilities, can be rewritten.

I know that's easy to say and harder to actually do at the kitchen table on a Tuesday evening. So let me walk you through what I've been seeing from parents, and what genuinely seems to help.

Where That Story Comes From

When I looked at what parents are searching for this week on Pinterest, "how to help child with maths anxiety" and "maths anxiety symptoms in kids" are both rising fast. That's not a coincidence. And when I read through the threads parents are posting on Reddit, one quote stopped me cold:

"She freezes and then can't access what she does know, and then that becomes more evidence to her that she's just bad at it."

That sentence describes the whole cycle in one breath. A child freezes under pressure. They can't retrieve what they actually know. They interpret that blank moment as proof of permanent failure. The label "I'm bad at maths" forms, hardens, and starts to do real damage. Every new maths moment they approach with a head start of dread.

The freeze isn't stupidity. It isn't even forgetfulness. What's happening in those blank moments is that anxiety floods the working memory, leaving no room to actually think. Once a child believes they're bad at something, the anxiety arrives before the question does.

Why the Usual Encouragement Doesn't Land

Most of us try the obvious things first. "You're not bad at maths, you just need to practise more." "Come on, you know this one, we did it yesterday." "Look, I'll sit with you and we'll do it together."

And the child nods, or cries, or stares at the ceiling. Nothing shifts.

The reason encouragement alone doesn't work is that your child isn't arguing with you rationally. The belief has become emotional. It sits below the level where cheerful reassurance reaches. What they need isn't to be told they're wrong. They need enough small wins, repeated often enough, to feel wrong.

That distinction matters more than any worksheet or reward chart.

What Actually Helps: Separating Identity from Outcome

The first thing worth trying is a small but deliberate shift in language, at home and whenever the topic comes up. Instead of "you're so good at maths" (when things go well) or "you just need to try harder" (when they don't), try pointing to the process rather than the result.

"You stuck with that one even when it was tricky." "You tried a different way when the first approach didn't work." "That one was hard and you got there."

This isn't just feel-good talk. It slowly disconnects your child's sense of who they are from whether they got the right answer in that moment. Maths becomes something they do, not something that defines them.

The second thing is finding a context where maths doesn't feel like a test. This is harder than it sounds because most maths apps and homework tasks are structured exactly like tests, right down to the timer and the red screen when something goes wrong. From the parents we speak to, that format is often the very thing that embedded the "I'm bad at maths" story in the first place.

Multiplayer games, when they're well-designed, do something clever here. They spread the attention across the fun of the game rather than focusing it entirely on the maths question. The question arrives, the child answers, the game moves on. There's no lingering red screen, no public ranking that confirms their worst fear. Over time, and it does take time, the association between maths and failure starts to loosen.

In the conversations we've had with parents so far, the shift that seems to matter most isn't a sudden leap in times-tables knowledge. It's the first time a child sits down to do maths practice without sighing. That small change, going from dread to neutrality, is genuinely significant. Neutrality can become curiosity. Curiosity can become confidence.

Something You Can Try Tonight

If your child came home this week and said "I hate maths" or "I can't do it", try this before anything else. Don't go straight to the tables. Find one single maths fact your child definitely knows. Something easy, something they got right last week even if they've forgotten it this week. Ask them that one question, casually, in the middle of doing something else. Let them get it right. Say nothing more than "yep, that's it." And leave it there.

That's it. One right answer, no fanfare, no pressure to do ten more. You're just creating a tiny crack in the story.

Do it again tomorrow with something equally small. You are not trying to teach them their tables in a week. You are trying to chip away at a belief that formed gradually, and the only way to shift it is gradually in the other direction.

A Note on Knowing When to Ask for More Support

If your child's maths avoidance is severe, if they're crying regularly, refusing to engage entirely, or describing themselves as stupid, it's worth speaking to their teacher or the school's SENCO. Maths anxiety at that level sometimes has an underlying cause, whether that's a working memory difficulty, signs of dyscalculia, or simply a cumulative confidence collapse that needs a different kind of support. You don't have to diagnose anything. You just need to name what you're seeing to the right person.
