If your child dreads maths, freezes at the mention of times tables, or bursts into tears before a numeracy lesson, the first instinct is often to call it "math anxiety". That label is not wrong, exactly, but in 2026 there is a growing and overdue conversation happening across schools and SEN communities: is it *really* just anxiety, or could it be dyscalculia? These are two distinct things, and confusing them means children often miss out on the specific support they actually need.

I want to be upfront about something: I noticed this shift picking up real momentum when I looked into the latest professional development trends for teachers this year. What stood out to me was just how many new PD courses, SEN forums, and EdTech conversations are now separating dyscalculia from the broader umbrella of "math anxiety" as a catch-all term. Schools, particularly those with strong special education programmes, are starting to ask better questions, and that matters enormously for children who have been quietly struggling for years.

So, What Is the Actual Difference?

Math anxiety is an emotional response. It is the racing heart, the blank mind, the sense of dread that descends the moment numbers appear. It can affect children of all abilities, including some who are genuinely strong mathematicians but who have had bad experiences, been put on the spot, or absorbed a message at home or school that "maths is hard".

Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty. It is neurological in origin, and it affects how the brain processes numerical information at a fundamental level. Children with dyscalculia often struggle to understand the *meaning* of numbers, not just the mechanics of calculation. They may have difficulty with number sense, telling the time, understanding sequences, or estimating quantities. Estimates suggest dyscalculia affects somewhere between 3 and 7 percent of the school-age population, which is a significant number of children whose difficulties go unidentified every year.

The two conditions can, and frequently do, coexist. A child with dyscalculia who has spent years confused and behind in class will almost certainly develop math anxiety on top of it. But treating the anxiety without addressing the underlying processing difficulty is like putting a plaster over something that needs a different kind of care altogether.

Why the Confusion Has Gone on So Long

Honestly, part of the problem is how maths difficulty has historically been framed. When I look at conversations in SEN communities and early years education spaces, what I keep hearing is that dyscalculia has long sat in the shadow of dyslexia. Dyslexia is now widely understood, widely screened for, and well-resourced in most schools. Dyscalculia has lagged behind, partly because reading difficulties are more visible and more disruptive to the whole curriculum.

The result is that a lot of children with dyscalculia have been told they are "not trying hard enough", given more repetitive drills, or simply reassured that maths gets easier. The drills often make things worse. Repetitive, timed times tables exercises, the kind that reward speed above understanding, can be actively harmful for children whose brains process numerical information differently.

Spotting the Signs: What to Look For

Neither I nor anyone at XTables Champions is qualified to give a clinical diagnosis. That belongs with an educational psychologist or a SEN specialist, and if you have serious concerns, pursuing a formal assessment is absolutely the right step. What I can share, based on what schools and parents talk about, are the patterns worth paying attention to.

With math anxiety, you tend to see: avoidance behaviour that is situational (appears before tests, in class, not at other times), a child who *can* do the work when calm and given time, and emotional distress that eases when the pressure is removed.

With dyscalculia, the difficulties are more persistent and structural. The child may struggle to remember which number comes after which, even after lots of practice. They may count on their fingers well beyond the age most children stop. They may find it genuinely hard to judge whether one group of objects is bigger than another at a glance. Time, money, directions and sequences often cause confusion too, because so much of daily life is number-dependent.

If you are a parent reading this and nodding along, it is worth raising it with your child's class teacher first, and asking whether a SEN referral might be appropriate. In the US, families can request an evaluation through their school district under IDEA, and it is worth exploring what IEP (Individualised Education Programme) goals around maths might look like if dyscalculia is confirmed. In the UK, speak to the school's SENCO.

Why Traditional Times Tables Drills Often Fall Flat

This is something I think about a lot in the context of what we do at XTables Champions. The traditional approach to times tables, repetitive chanting, rapid-fire testing, timed worksheets, is built for children who process numbers in a fairly standard way. For neurodivergent learners, and particularly for those with dyscalculia or significant math anxiety, that approach tends to entrench the problem rather than solve it.

What actually helps is structured, low-pressure repetition with genuine understanding built in. Visual and spatial representations of multiplication. Consistent encouragement that separates effort from speed. And an environment where a child can try, get it wrong, and try again without feeling that their self-worth is on the line.

When I look at what we are hearing from the schools and families we speak to in our early work, the single biggest thing they ask for is a tool that removes the threat response from maths practice. Not a shortcut, not a trick, just a calmer, more structured way in.

The Right EdTech Can Make a Real Difference

The growing interest in dyscalculia-specific EdTech tools is something I find genuinely encouraging. Not all maths apps are created equal, and the ones that simply replicate a timed paper test on a screen are not serving neurodivergent learners well. The tools that are gaining traction are those that build number sense step by step, use multi-sensory approaches, allow children to progress at their own pace, and do not punish wrong answers with a loud buzzer or a countdown clock.
